Chapter 12

This picture represents Finny in the infirmary.

After the fall all the students ran over to me. I could feel the pain in the leg that was broken before. Then the wrestling coach came over to give me first aid. They also sent someone to fetch Dr. Stanpole. When he arrives they put me into a chair and take me to the infirmary. I heard Dr. Stanpole exclaim to Gene that i broke my leg again but this time it was a more clean break. That night when the doctors left my room I heard someone crawl through the window. I looked and through their shadow I could tell it was Gene. I was so mad at Gene I began to shake and struggle in my bed until I fell out. Before he left he said, "I'm sorry(177)." This was all he said several times before he left. The next morning Dr. Stanpole sends a note to Gene to get me clothes out of the dorm. When he gets to the room I showed no emotion. He gave me my suitcase and I looked though it to find some clothes to wear. I burst into tears and exclaimed how there must have been a blind disturbance when Gene had shaken the limb of the tree forcing me to fall. I believed him when Gene told me there was no way he could have stopped what had happened, it just did. The doctor tells Gene that he has to set my bone tonight and will inform him after the surgery. After the surgery the Doctor informs Gene that a bit of marrow slipped out from the bone as he was setting it and Finny has died. In shock Finny does not cry throughout the funeral. He felt as though when I had died, he had.

Chapter 11

This picture represents the snowball fight Gene and Finny were in.

The next day Gene returns from Leper's house. When he returns Finny is in the middle of a snowball fight. The snowball fight was located in the "Fields Beyond(144)." This was passed the gym, the tennis courts, river, and the stadium right on the edge of the woods. A few kids stopped and said hello but no one asked about Leper. Gene was then hit with a snowball in the back of the head and I yelled, "You're on our side, even if you do have lousy aim(145)." I walked over to him with my cane and it seemed as though he was hesitant about joining. I then asked him how Leper was and he replied, "Oh Leper's-how would he be? You know Leper-(146)?" This was a strange answer and it seemed as though Gene was hiding something from me. In an instant I was struck by a snowball on the side of the face and I returned fire. Gene then joined in shortly. Later on Brinker comes to our dorm and says that Leper has "Cracked". As time passes all the eligible boys enlist into the war except Gene, but Brinker takes him aside and tells him he knows the reason he hasn't enlisted was because he pities Finny. After hearing this I told him the reason why I believe the war is a conspiracy is because I had tried to enlist many times but they would not accept me because of my Leg. Gene is in awe but for some reason seems to understand why I felt the need to say things that I said about the war. Later on that night Gene and I are told by Brinker to come into the Assembly Hall. Here there are judges and an audience to inquiry into the case of Finny's accident. Brinker first asks me what I believe happened and I tell him that I lost balance and fell. I also told them that I do not know how I lost balance and that Gene was at the bottom of the tree. He then sends us to retrieve Leper so he can testify. Leper says that he saw someone push me off the tree branch. I got up and exclaimed I didn't care what happened and I ran out of the room down the marble stairs. Going down the stairs I lost control and fell.

Chapter 10

This picture represents Leper and Gene taking a walk after eating lunch.

Gene left the next day in order to get to Leper's Christmas location. This location is his home in Vermont. Gene has to take the train then he gets off and rides a bus to where Leper is. He is trying very hard to believe that Leper has not deserted the army, thinking that when Leper said "escape" he meant from spies. When Gene gets there he finds out that it is true that he has deserted. He exclaims to Gene that the army was going to give him a section 8 discharge insanity. Leper did not seem like himself at all when he bursts out, "Like that time you knocked Finny out of the tree(137)." This infuriated Gene and he sprung out of his chair at him. His mother then came down and Gene exclaimed that he should be going. Before he left Leper, still laughing, told him to stay for lunch and he did. He did mostly because he felt bad and that it would be rude to just leave. After lunch the two boys go out for a walk. Leper explains how things have changed since he enlisted. He tells Gene about how he hallucinates a lot and that is what makes him so crazy. He would often think of things like, "the idea of his face on a woman’s body(140)," this would make Leper act very funny. Gene finally left knowing that there is seriously something wrong with Leper.

Chapter 9

This picture represents the winter carnival hat Finny created.
We find out that Leper has enlisted and everyone is shocked. I have a feeling that Gene beliefs for the war is that it is unreal. Jokes are made about Leper when it is heard that there has been an allied victory people would say such things like, "At it again(118)." This was just people joking that Leper was the cause of the victories. Gene and I were not ones to joke about this in such places like the butt room where it seemed like that was all they did. So we soon stopped going to the butt room all together. I thought it would be fun to create a winter carnival so I assigned everyone a task. Brinker would be the organizer of the transport of equipment from the dormitory to a park on the river as his roommate Brownie Perkins would guard the jugs of hard cider buried underneath the snow. At the carnival there would be a Ski jump, snow statues, prizes, and music provided by Chet Douglas. I had some of the cider and began to dance on top of a table showing off my graceful and wild side. I then saw Gene show off his athleticism to the crowd and I am proud to see that everyone was in awe. Later, Gene receives a letter from Leper that he has escaped, and his safety requires Gene to travel to Leper's Christmas location.

This picture represents the bed Gene made for Finny.

When Gene got back to the room, i jokingly criticized his clothing, "Where did you get those clothes(95)!" I could tell he was just happy to see me and wasn't effected by the way I was talking to him. "You don't have to advertise like that, we all know you're the worst dressed man in the class(94)," even when I had said that he still seemed fine. He told me those were is working clothes, and that he has been working all day. I then asked him, "In the boiler room(95)?", but he corrected me and said he was out shoveling the train tracks. Gene then began to take off his clothes that he had been working in all day. When he finally got to his undershirt I told him he should have worn that all day. He then noticed my crutches, this was no surprise to him because he had seen me in crutches the time i broke my ankle playing football.I then asked him, "Whats is all this crap about no maids(96)?" He explained that there were no more maids accounting we were at war and that was not such a huge sacrifice. This kind of surprised me to hear Gene talk of war, he seemed unselfish. He then kindly went and found sheets and made up my bed. Gene looked surprised that I was not sensitive about being helped. Gene told me he was thinking about enlisting with Brinker and I became furious. I then convinced him to tell Brinker that he wasn't going to and i succeeded. This was a relief to me because if Gene left then who would be here as my leg heals. I began to make fun of Brinker nicknaming him, Yellow Peril. This was his nickname because we joked about how Brinker was Madam Chiang Kai-Shek's son from China. My favorite time of the year is winter and i suggested we skip class so I could revisit some of the school that I haven't seen in a while. We first went to the Gym and into the locker room, where I asked Gene if he has picked a team to join. Gene tells me that he hasn't because of the war. I explained to him that the war is a conspiracy by the adult establishment, "The fat old men who don't want us crowding them out of their jobs(107)." I then tell Gene to do chin ups, I push him far enough to get 30 reps. I told Gene of how I wanted someday to be in the Olympics, so now Gene has to be in them. As I train him for the Olympics of 1944, he will train me academically.

Chapter 7

This dungeon represents when Brinker refers to the butt room as a dungeon.

This picture represents the snowy train tracks where the boys shovel.

This picture represents Leper Cross Country skiing.

Gene was at many times confronted with questions about the incident that occurred. Often times jokes are made to Gene such as when Brinker says, "I bet you knew all the time Finny wouldn't be back this fall. That's why you picked him for a roommate, right(79)?." This was Brinkers way of joking around with Gene saying he made me fall off the branch so he could have the whole dorm room to himself. obviously this was not true but Gene still felt like it wasn't right to joke about what had happened. The two then go to the butt room where Brinker makes another joke and says, "Here's your prisoner, gentlemen". This refers to Gene being a prisoner for "Doing away with his roommate so he could have a whole room to himself(81)." Gene once again is furious about what the boys are saying and yells, "God damn it! Shut up! I swear to God you ride a joke longer than anybody I know(81)." He Then leaves the room explaining he has to go study, which isn't the case but he doesn't feel comfortable with all of the negative jokes about what happened to me at the tree. The next day Gene, Brinker, and Chet Douglas were set out to shovel near the tracks. Leper on the other hand is of cross country skiing in search of a dam. The troop train then goes bye and the boys wave and cheer. Later that day Gene comes back to Devon where I am waiting for him in the dorm.

Chapter 6

This chapel represents the first chapel service of the year for Gene.
This picture represents the footbridge the boys walked across.

This picture represents what Finny wanted Gene to do for him, play sports.

This picture represents when Finny was mad at Gene for being assistant.

Gene mentioned to me how when he returned to school for the winter session, everything was a lot different. Most of the discipline was the way it was before Finny had left. This was very surprising to me because it made it seem like I was the cause of all the discipline that had left, and now that I had gone, it has all returned again. I could tell this bothered Gene a lot because not only am I not there anymore, everything has changed as if me leaving was something good. "If you broke the rules, they broke you(66)," this shows you how it used to be and how it is now because I'm gone. Finny had seemed to remember me a lot when he was at school such as, "Whenever I glimpsed at this river, I thought of Phineas(67)." He remembered me there because i did one of his favorite tricks where i would balance on the prow of a canoe like a river god. I called Finny a few days later to see how things were and if he still was acting "Crazy". I remember the first thing i said was, "Happy first day of the new academic year(75)!". He then started to stutter as he was talking to him and i told him to stop because I was paying for the call. When i asked him who they roomed him with he told me he didn't get any new roommate and was by himself. "Saving my place for me! Good old Devon(75).", i said to pick his spirits up. I also said to him he wouldn't let that happen anyway, in a friendly tone. He told me he wouldn't and of course i believed him because "roommates are roommates(75)." I was angry at my self thinking that my best friend Gene were ever to be crazy enough to let them put someone else in my room, and i apologized. I thought this until he told me he became assistant crew manager. I was really upset at this because what I really wanted him to do was to succeed in sports in my place. "Listen, pal, if I cant play sports, you're going to play them for me(77)," I wanted him to become a part of me.

Chapter 5

This train represents what Gene road home from Devon.
This picture represents outside Boston where Finny lives.

This picture represents Finny's shattered leg.

This doctor represents Dr. Stanpole, the doctor who was with Finny.

After the incident, we find out that my leg has been shattered from the fall. I heard a lot of the kids new about it because of rumors going around, "but i heard all the rumors that came out of it(53)," Gene was informed. Even though rumors spread and Gene discovered somewhat of what happened, no one was totally notified at first. I'm sure rumors also spread about Gene having shaken the branch and forcing me to fall, but i knew that couldn't be true because he and I are best friends. A couple days later Dr. Stanpole informed Gene, "Finny's better(54)!", and Gene made his way to where i had been hospitalized. Although i was feeling better the doctor informed him that I was still not very well. He also learned the terrible truth, Sports are finished for him, after an accident like that. Of course(55)." This I could allready tell disappointed Gene greatly, maybe even more then how disappointed I was. As much of this hurt the both of us I know Gene would help me in any possible way he could. When he first walked in i remember telling him, "you look worse than I do(56)" I said this because he really did, and it hurt me more to see him feel so much pain for what had happened to me. He asked me questions about what had happened and if I knew what went wrong with the tree. I had no answers for him though, I had no more knowledge about the situation then he did. He then begin to say how he had shaken the tree and meant for me to fall out of jealousy. I knew this was impossible.I knew he was just saying that so maybe i would tell him the truth of what happened,if had I known the truth. He then began to tell me something that was, "the worst thing in the world(59)", until he was interrupted by Dr. Stanpole who made him leave. I couldn't figure out what he was going to tell me, and it bothered me for the longest time. The next day I was taken home to my house in Boston. After Gene's leave instead of taking the train to Devon, he takes it to my house to visit. He exclaimed how he thought about me a lot on his vacation, he also says he did shake the tree. I knew this was totally false and didn't believe it one bit. He then went on his way and told me he would be back for thanksgiving.

Chapter 4

This picture represents Gene studying
This represents what Finny thinks Gene wants to be, class valedictorian.

This picture represents the two boys doing the double jump.

This picture represents the time the two boys came back from the beach, 10:00.

I remember waking up around dawn, I went for a quick swim before we left off to school. We then got back from our biking trip at 10:00, just in time for Gene's trigonometry test which he was talking about failing our whole bike ride back. When he came back to the room I found out he had failed the test. He seemed as though he was mad at me for this happening and began to catch up on his trigonometry. I remember telling Gene, "You work too hard(43)." I definitely though this was true because he knows all French, History and English, so what does he need trigonometry for. I told him i thought he was trying to be class valedictorian. He told me he disagreed and said he wasn't.He exclaimed that, "Don't be stupid i wouldn't waste my time on anything like that(43)." After he seemed to have thought about what i said and asked me, "but you wouldn't mind, would you(44)?" I replied, "I'd kill myself out of jealous envy(44)." This showed him that I was kidding but made him think that there would be a chance that I would get a little upset. I could tell that he began to work on this goal to become valedictorian but i couldn't really figure out if he was doing it for himself or if he was doing it to compete with me. Although at times it became awkward between us, we were still best friends despite the fact. I found out Gene told Mr. Prud'homme that he and I went to the beach. The funny thing is that Mr. Prud'homme totally ignored it, it was like the school had lost a lot of discipline because of me. I am proud of Gene because even though is studying a lot more for school, he finds time to attend all of the clubs meetings. I ran into our room and told Gene that Leper was going to jump off the tree into the river to become a full member. I must have interrupted his studies because it seemed as though he thought i was interrupting him on purpose. I told him he didn't have to come if he didn't want to but he did. I decided he and I should do a double jump, but as we were both on the branch it became very unsteady. Something than moved the branch from under me and i fell off, i felt Gene dive after me but was not able to grasp me enough to save me.

Chapter 3

This picture represents the six boys that joins the club.

This picture represents the rules of the club the boys had to obey.

This picture represents when the two boys Gene and Finny went to the beach.

This picture represents the game blitzball the boys played made by Finny.

After I had caught Gene from falling we decided that he wouldn't be on the tree in the first place if it wasn't for me. I agree with this and i have no problem after all im glad that Gene is ok. We then created the Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session, which was a club that held meetings at the tree in which we jumped into the river. To begin the meetings i decided Gene and I will jump from the tree. I don't know how Funny felt about his but it seemed like he would do it. The other friends that joined first had signed up to be "trainees(25)". This meant the each of the new members would complete there training of the club and become a full member if they discover the courage to jump of the tree into the river as Gene and I do. I believe Gene's dedication to me and the Club because even though i think he doesn't seem fond of jumping off the tree he still does it. Otherwise I would have lost face with Phineas, and that would have been unthinkable(26)." This shows tat Gene is mostly doing the club for his best friends sake. Although many times, "Classes could be cut, meals missed, Chapel skipped(26)," it was part of our club and even if Gene had problems with those exceptions he still participated by my side. I soon became bored with the games we played for gym, so I created my own game called "blitz ball". The game requires more than two participants and involves one medicine ball. The boy with the ball tries to run passed the other players who are trying to tackle him, the player with the ball can either try to run passed each of the other players or can pass it off to another. I really like the game a lot and have began to become very good at it. What I like about it the most is that there is no real winner, we just keep playing until we get tired or have to go to class. I remember one day Gene and I were in the pool and i saw a school record on the wall, i decided i could beat the record and I had Gene time me. I beat the record but i didn't want people knowing so i told Gene i didn't want to do it in front of people because I really don't find swimming such a manly sport. One of my favorite times with Gene is when i then decided we should skip classes and go to the beach. We rode our bikes up to the beach, it was a long ride but it was definitely worth it. We used fake army i.d.'s and got ourselves some beer to drink on the beach. We had our beer and i talked to Gene about how we are best friends, but Gene kind of seemed to hold back.

This picture represents Mr. Prud'homme because he dresses very formally.

This picture represents the 2 person dorm room Gene and Finny shared.

The Following morning Gene and i woke up to the knowledge that our absence at dinner was noticed. Mr. Prud'homme then stopped at our door to punish us. Gene referred to him as, "the clean-washed shine of summer mornings in the north country(14)." Mr. Prud'homme was not careless like the other Devon masters because he is a substitute, he has broad shoulders with a grey business suit. When he began to ask us questions i did all the talking because i really know how to handle situations like this. I explained to him that we were swimming in the river, then a wrestling match, also a sunset that i explained "anybody would want to watch(14)." I began to go on and on with my story creating confusion for Mr. Prud'homme. I could tell Gene was impressed with how i was able to go on and on with my created story and make Mr. Prud'homme less angered. At the end, he began to say, "If you hadn't already missed nine meals in the last two weeks...(14)," he gave up. Its not that I really wanted to be forgiven for missing dinner, its that i could see that Mr. Prud'homme was pleased. I told him that we just had to jump out of that tree, and we then became friendly with each other completely forgetting the punishment for our actions. I explained to him that we wanted to be ready is they ever lowered the draft ages because we were going to be seventeen at the end of the summer. Mr. Prud'homme just stared at me in amazement which was what I was aiming to do, he soon just walked out of the room. The whole facility has seemed to grow a liking to me. They are astonished at the fact that i am able to have so much respect for the school but at the same time able to disobey the regulations in contains. That day i chose to wear a bright pink shirt which represented the emblem for the celebration of the first allied bombing of central Europe. Gene seemed to envy the fact that i was able to get away with wearing such a vibrant color that would seem to look somewhat "homosexual". That day at tea i decided to show my conversation skills with the sub headmaster Mr. Patch-Withers. We discussed the bombings in Europe. As we were talking about this event his wife discovered i had been using my tie as a belt. Mr. Withers seemed as though he was waiting for an explanation so i explained it to him and got away with it, even able to get a laugh out of him. Gene and i leave and i suggest to jump out of the tree again. We go and I'm waiting for Gene to jump when he suddenly attempts to walk back from on the branch. He trips and as he falls i catch him. After we decide to make a club called the "Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session.

Chapter 1

This represents Gene jumping out of the tree into the river.

This represents the two boys, Gene and Finny.

This picture represents the tree near the river.

This represents the two boys wrestling.
Hello, this is Phineas welcome to my blog. Most people call me Finny. I came into the story when my best friend Gene began his flashback. You first witnessed my presence at the tree in the woods where Gene,Elwin Lepellier,Chet Douglas, and Bobby Zane were all hanging out before dinner. I remember telling Gene, "You cant stand around admiring the view, Jump(9)!". This was after i had demonstrated jumping off the tree branch into the river. Jumping off the branch into the river is what the older boys do in order to be able to departure for war, so its pretty much a big deal. Soon after, i get him to jump in. Although he does i was able to encourage any of the others to do it to. When we were walking back to go to dinner, i simply said to Gene, "You were very good, once i shamed you into it(10)." I thought that this statement was totally true but Gene disagreed with me, he said, "You didn't shame anybody into anything(10)." This was clearly a false statement on his part, i believe i did shame him into it. The bell for dinner then rang, which would make us late. I tripped Gene when he began to run to catch dinner before it was to late.I liked to call Gene's way of running his "West point stride" which is why i tripped him in the first place. This frustrated him because he then tackled me to the ground. As we wrestled the other guys ran ahead to be on time for dinner. They began to yell at us to hurry up. After i won the wrestling match against Gene I said, "Better hurry, or they'll put you in the guard house(11)." We then starting walking faster in order to catch up with Bobby, Leper, and Chet. On our way he trusted his hip into me forcing me to the ground, he put his knees on my chest and i had no way of escaping. This is one of the reasons why i like Gene, hes a tough kid and i respect that in his personality. By this time we both knew that we were going to be late for dinner. When we got back to the room after missing our dinner we read our assignments. Gene was halfway through his book, "Tess of the D'Urbervilles", while i was struggling on "Far from the Madding Crowd. We had an illegal radio in the room which had to be turned down softly but we were able to hear the news. The lights around the school began to turn off one bye one. Gene and I undressed, he got into pajamas but i didn't because they are nonmilitary.
